Subject: Re: [RDG] ODG/RDG: Downing Professorship of the Laws of England +

The latest news from Cambridge provides a threefold opportunity to remark on UER scholars: to congratulate and thank Sarah and Lionel for their services to the subject and their successive tenures of the Downing chair; and similarly with Bill Cornish, who died on 8 January.

Of course, Bill's reputation rests mainly on his prominence in the law of intellectual property, which tends to overshadow other things. Yet, in the days when UER was struggling to find recognition as a subject, Bill was one of the few who wrote on it and was for a time the mainstay of the University of London Restitution Ll.M. course that has done so much to help grow the subject internationally. I first taught Restitution at LSE with him and Paul Matthews and, to return to Lionel's possibly best known interest, still recall the look on Bill's face when Paul gave an example, in robust terms, of the products into which a supplier of animal feedstuff might contemplate tracing.

Subject: [RDG] ODG/RDG: Downing Professorship of the Laws of England

Dear Colleagues,

Many congratulations to out to ODGer and RDG list convenor Lionel Smith who has been elected to the Downing Professorship of the Laws of England at Cambridge.  He will take up the position in October 2022: https://www.law.cam.ac.uk/press/news/2022/01/lionel-smith-join-faculty-downing-professor-laws-england.

Lionel follows in the footsteps of a number of distinguished holders of the professorship, including Dame Sarah Worthington, Gareth Jones, Sir John Baker, and FW Maitland.  Commenting on Professor Smith’s appointment, Professor Mark Elliott, Chair of the Faculty of Law, said: "I am delighted that Professor Smith will be joining the Faculty of Law as our new Downing Professor of the Laws of England. An outstanding researcher, teacher and academic leader, Professor Smith will be an enormous asset to the Faculty; we look forward very much to welcoming him to Cambridge and to working with him."

Canada’s loss is England’s gain.

Sincerely,

esig-law
